Of course, the first and ultimate thanks is given to JONI
MITCHELL: her incredible artistry, her beautiful melodies, & her
deep, heartfelt lyrics. She has inspired thousands to write songs and seek alternate
tunings and chord formations, and she is the primary reason this web site exists. Second,
thanks to OLGA and all the contributors of Joni Mitchell songstoo
numerous to mention here (I'll be thanking them individually, when it arises) especially HOWARD WRIGHT and HARLAN
L. THOMPSON. Their copious contributions to
OLGA gave me the idea for this web site. Though I have made some
corrections (in my belief) to their work, it was where I began my quest!
Sadly, due to greed and stupidity, OLGA is dying slowly. Please visit the site (www.olga.net), and sign the
petition!
Third, thanks to WALLY BREESE and JIM LEAHY of The Joni Mitchell Home Pagewww.jonimitchell.com, Wally included the great piece about Joni Mitchell tunings by Jim
Leahy and gave the link to OLGA for Joni tab (Wally includes no tab on his website, but he
does have lyrics). I probably would not have found OLGA without him! He is totally
dedicated to Joni, and a very nice person, as well! And his website has everything you
ever wanted to know about Joni ... and he added a link to my website! Thanks for your inspiration, Wally!
Fourth, I'd like to thank my friend, MONICA PASSIN,
singer & performer extraordinaire (and guitar teacher) who gave me many Joni Mitchell
tunings and tabs, particularly That Song About the Midway which I tweaked a bit and
now is perfect! Thanks, Moyer a daahhll!
Fifth, I'd like to thank CHRIS
RIPLEY for identifying about 90% of all those chords I used throughout the
TABS section, giving them their proper names. Chris has a Masters in Jazz Performance from
Queens College, but being a drummer, he doesn't get to flex that part of his music
training very often, so he loves doing it (and Joni's music is very challenging in that
respect). Thank youit was definitely a very important final step in the
process.
Sixth, I'd like to thank my childhood friend, NANCY LEVI,
who, during Easter vacation 1968, came over my aunt's house, showed me a travis picking
pattern and said, "You need to learn this." She went to Hunter High School
(NYC), where only the creme de la creme of teenage intellectuals went, so she was exposed
to all this cool stuff. After showing me about 15 times, I had the pattern memorized, but
wasn't even close to playing it with any speed (she insist I learn it so we could play
"Marcie" together). It took me months, and all the time I kept asking
her, "Why am I learning this? I can barely strum, and you're making me learn this
really hard thing ... why?" Thank you, Nanci, it was one of the
coolest things I ever learned, musically.
Seventh, I'd like to thank YAHOO! for
listing my page in their search engine in the first place and then giving me such a great
listing. They are the most popular search engine in existence (and supposedly fairly
choosy about who they list, so I am indeed honored) and since the listing began on
Wednesday, October 7, 1998, I've gotten over 36,000 hits! Wow! Thanks so much!
Lastly ... and rather oddly ... I'd like to thank my ex-boyfriend
JULES SANTOS regardless
of the fact that he was an idiot and a control freak who played a song for me that
he had written in FFCGAC tuning which I immediately recognized as Joni's
tuning for I Don't Know Where I Stand (the one for which I had searched for 25
years) ... which started my incredible voyage of playing Joni's tunes off the record.
Wherever you are, thanks, but please... stay away!
