I Don't Know Where I Stand by Joni Mitchell

Tabbed: December 1995

TUNING: F F C G A C (the 'F' strings are exactly the same note). The 6th string 'F' is not played until the end. Jim Leahy lists it with a 'C' for that string, but if you listen to it carefully, you can hear a 'G' played twice while she arpeggiates the last chord, and that implies to me that it is an 'F' not a 'C.' This is near-perfect, as it is my favorite Joni Mitchell song (others fall very close behind!), so if anyone needs help, please e-mail me.

Chord names are thanks Chris Ripley. Thanks to Jules Santos, control freak and ex-leach, for the tuning. (I suppose each person that comes into our lives has their own unique purpose. I look at it like that was his purpose ... to give me this tuning and get the heck out!) I had it long figured out before I ever knew that I could find Joni's songs online. I did send Harlan Thompson the chord and tuning changes, but he never replied to my e-mail.

Funny day, looking for laughter and finding it there
D9 Cdim
Sunny day, braiding wild flowers and leaves in my hair

Picked up a pencil and wrote 'I love you' in my finest hand
Dbmaj7b5 Gmsus4 F9-Gmsus4-F9
Wanted to send it but I don't know where I stand
D9 ...
Telephone, even the sound of your voice is still new
All alone in California and talking to you
And feeling too foolish and strange to say the words that I had planned
I guess it's too early, 'cause I don't know where I stand.

Do do do do do do dooooo do do do do do do do do do do do do
D9 ...
Crickets call, courting their ladies in stardappled green
Thickets tall, until the morning comes up like a dream
All muted and misty, so drowsy now, I'll take what sleep I can
I know that I miss you but I don't know where I stand (2x)
